1. WHREN-LILA ACTIVITIES
The WHREN-LILA East link capacity was increased to 2.5Gbps in November,
2006, in time for the Super Computing 2006 (SC06) event. This
ahead-of-schedule increase was made possible from funds provided by the
Inter-regional Center for High-Energy Physics Research Education and
Outreach (CHEPREO) project, NSF Award# 0312038.
The WHREN-LILA links were used extensively in the SC06 bandwidth challenge.
New protocols and tools, such as Fast Data Transport (FDT) and LStore, used
the LILA links to test data intensive transfers from the U.S. to Latin
America. The WHREN team is actively working with these teams to ensure
optimal performance.
2. FIU-CIARA ACTIVITIES
CIARA Goes Global with CyberBridges
CIARA, in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD),
recently won a 3-year, $765,000 Nation Science Foundation
Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Team grant to implement Global CyberBridges. The
program expands on CyberBridges, which was initiated in 2005 to help FIU
scientists and engineers from a wide range of disciplines, including biology
and physics, advance their research through CI. CyberBridges relies on
graduate students to serve as bridges, transferring CI know-how from CIARA
technical staff to FIU scientists.

3. CENIC ACTIVITIES
CENIC's annual conference will take place on March 12th through the 14th at
the La Jolla Marriott Hotel in San Diego, California. The theme for the
2007 conference is "Innovations in Networking". For more information on the
conference, go to http://cenic07.cenic.org/.

4. ATLANTIC WAVE ACTIVITIES
Physicists Set New Record for Network Data Transfer
An international team of physicists, computer scientists, and network
engineers led by the California Institute of Technology, CERN, and the
University of Michigan and partners at the University of Florida and
Vanderbilt, as well as participants from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro State
University, UERJ, and the State Universities of São Paulo, USP and UNESP)
and Korea (Kyungpook National University, KISTI) joined forces to set new
records for sustained data transfer between storage systems during the
SuperComputing 2006 (SC06) Bandwidth Challenge (BWC).
One link provided by AtlanticWave from NYC to DC and Miami was used to carry
traffic from CERN coming over the USLHCNet NYC-Geneva circuit and one link
provided by UltraLight/FLR from Jacksonville.

5. PACIFIC WAVE ACTIVITIES
In November, Pacific Wave added a second 10 gigabit port in Los Angeles for
NLR.
Pacific Wave is also working with SingTel to bring up a new connection for
National University of Singapore-GigaPoP in Los Angeles. It is expected to
be installed in the first quarter of 2007.
Discussions are also underway to connect Google to the exchange at multiple
points.
Jacqueline Brown chaired the Global Collaboration Workshop at the 23rd APAN
meeting held in Manila, The Philippines January 23, 2007 where John
Silvester presented a talk on the evolution of the Pacific Wave architecture
in his PacificWave Update.
Jacqueline Brown was elected as the Chair of the APAN Program Committee.

6. CUDI ACTIVITIES
CUDI's conference, Reunión de Primavera 2007, will be held on March 21, 22
and 23 in Torreón, Coah., México. For more information, go to
http://www.cudi.edu.mx/primavera_2007/index.html

7. CLARA ACTIVITIES
Peering is operational between National LambdaRail (NLR) and redCLARA. CLARA
reaches the NLR Seattle router through the PacificWave exchange point in Los
Angeles.
